Why Travel Is Good For The Soul
Monday, October 24, 2016
In this day and age, with everyone so connected to each other through social media, it's easy enough to want to travel. Constantly bombarded with beautifully edited images of the canals in Venice, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Forbidden City in Beijing. It's so easy to get carried away in wanting to travel for the pictures and while it is a blessing to be able to share the magnificent beauty our world has to offer, I believe that the desire to travel should come from the heart, as travel is the best thing for our soul.

Having both the means and opportunity to travel is one of the most incredible blessings. I truly believe that there is no better cure for mental blocks than a change of scenery, whether it be travelling thousands of miles or just a trip to the country side. You don't have to go far in order to find new experiences and destinations. While I am very fortunate to of seen so much of the world I still love exploring my own country. From road-trips to 13 hour plane rides the journey is as much an adventure as anything else.
The moment you step off that plane and into unchartered territory you are bombarded with new people, new cultures and in some instances and entirely new language. A lot of which can feel frightening and overwhelming but even more so there is a sense of freedom and curiosity. In order to truly experience the world it is important to step outside of your hometown and become a tourist; whether it be for a day, a month or a year, to be an outsider in a different city can often help to re-align your own values and remind you of how important having a home somewhere in the world is. As amazing as travel can be there is nothing better than returning home with a fresh perspective and a brand new mindset.
To me what makes travelling, isn't the fancy hotels, the wonderful tourist attractions, or the beautiful shops, it's the people. Immersing yourself within the culture of the locals is the most amazing thing, each country and city has such a rich culture that it would be a waste if you did not experience it.
In the past years I have been fortunate enough to have had ample amounts of travel and my favourite thing has always been experiencing the culture and the atmosphere. Take New York City for example, one of the most incredible cities on earth. And although it is easy to google photos of the stunning skyline, there is nothing quite like be able to stand in Times Square and just; be there. The entire city is electric, a feeling that cannot be conveyed through a photo (no matter how many filters) it's something that you must experience for yourself.
I encourage all of you to travel as much as you can, take a day off, go outside, grab the keys, book a flight, go on. The world is waiting.
